B45: Historic BriskerGolfer: Harry Vardon, Six-Time British & One-Time US Open Champion

Nicknamed The Greyhound, Harry Vardon was the world’s greatest golfer of his era.

He had most of his tournament successes whilst he was attached to the wonderful Ganton Golf Club in North Yorkshire. To this day, Harry’s association with Ganton is celebrated at the club, including its dedicated Vardon room.

It is possible that the Ganton Greyhound Inn, close to the perimeter of the golf course, also alludes to Harry.

Harry revolutionised golfing attire, being the first Professional Golfer to wear knickerbockers, rather than the traditional and more restrictive English dress code.

In doing this he signalled his intent to be a BriskerGolfer.
